GAME-800 Portable Media Player

GAME-800 Portable Media Player

The GAME-800 portable media player is one device that is self-explanatory – not only does it allow you to enjoy retro games on the go, it also boasts audio and video playback in a rather squarish form factor. Features include :-

  • 320 x 240 resolution LCD display
  • NES, Game Boy, GBC and Mega Drive games supported
  • Text-to-speech eBook reader
  • Built-in digital camera
  • 4GB internal memory
  • SD memory card slot

The user interface is clearly ripped off from the iPhone and iPod touch, so while it might look cosmetically similar, don’t expect the experience to be the same as this will probably be extremely sluggish without touchscreen navigation, having to rely on the various buttons to get around instead. Would you fork out $80 for this or for the Multi Platform Portable Gaming Entertainment Station instead?

Reminder: How to Fix Conficker [Conficker]

Afraid you’ve got the evil Conficker worm that’s already begun snaking its way around the world? Thanks to herculean efforts by researchers, the detection and fix is pretty easy.

Symantec’s got a pretty simple (and free) tool specifically for Conficker: Download this file on an uninfected computer, follow the steps, and you should be okay. (If you can’t get to Symantec or other security sites, that’s a good sign you’ve got Conficker.) Also, via PC Mag, here’s the Conficker Working Group’s page of repair of tools.[Symantec]

HP Studying Android Netbooks

HP Studying Android Netbooks

According to the WSJ, HP is looking at what it can do in Netbooks using Android, the operating system that Google created (by acquiring a startup) for mobile phones. The more interesting question is: Will Android computers from HP would come with built-in 3G (operators could be a nice market to get) or if they will be better than the flavor of Linux that HP currently use? Also, will they feature a touch display?

The fact that HP is looking at this has been confirmed by HP’s VP Satjiv Chahil. However whether or not that would become a product is a different question.

Other companies have been talking about something similar (Asus, Qualcomm, TI…), some using PC hardware, others using a much lower-power mobile phone platform. Hopefully, both will be plenty cheap.

Moixa To Launch 3D Multi-touch Sphere

Moixa To Launch 3D Multi-touch Sphere

Moixa has plans to roll out a new method of interacting with computers by using its 3D interactive multi-touch sphere which can be used to display the world, browse web pages as well as control interactive games. This is the reality of a holocube-thingamajic, and has been dubbed the Sphere. Moixa’s hard work was recently rewarded with the patent being approved, and the Sphere shares roughly the same dimensions and weight as that of an apple. According to the company, “the device supports multi-touch interactions for zoom, selection, as well as 6 degree rotational and gyroscopic actions, with particular application in interactive games or complex control situations such as interacting with a nearby 3D screen or virtual space”. You can also collapse it to use it in its secondary form of a flat ellipsoid. What are some of the more interesting applications you can think of when it comes to the Moixa?

Skype For iPhone Buggy

Skype For iPhone Buggy

While Skype for both the iPhone and iPod touch was released today over the iTunes store, this application has already received more than a thousand reviews with a relatively poor average rating. Most of these user reviews were negative in nature, where complaints include the application being “buggy” in addition to crashes that occur within 30 to 60 seconds of starting. Even the usual soft reset of the handset failed to address these problems, and most people are already looking forward to the next update before giving another go at a software that offers VoIP capabilities to respective Wi-Fi-enabled devices.

Dealzmodo: 1′46″ of Silence By John Cage, Free Today on iTunes! [ITunes]

I’d like to kiss whoever at Apple decided to do this: today’s free iTunes “discovery download” is the first movement of avant-garde composer John Cage’s 4′33″, which is to say, it’s 1:46 of nothing.

More performance art/zen seance than actual music, 4′33″ is intended to emphasize those critical moments of nothingness in music by being composed of only that nothingness. The piece becomes whatever background sounds are present during a performance, making it probably the truest expression of Cage’s “everything is music” milieu.

And if you think downloading the piece from iTunes is more on the absurd side, check out this live performance, complete with full orchestra (turning blank pages) and audience. After each movement, the coughing, the coughing. Great stuff.

And this, clearly, is a performance John Cage would never have conceived of when he created the piece in the 1950s, but one he would enjoy very, very much, I think:

Whether Cage would be happy he was made the butt of what appears to be an April Fool’s Day joke though is another matter. [iTunes via MacUser]

MobiHand App Store Announced

MobiHand App Store Announced

Prior to RIM’s App World announcement, third party mobile software distributor, MobiHand, will ovver more than 5,000 free and paid software titles in its library to BlackBerry users without any of those ridiculous pricing requirements, all presented in a clean and simple user interface. Some of the more interesting features include a Deal of the Day offer that slashes off a huge chunk of the retail price off the featured software. RIM does have the advantage of being better positioned to kick off their App World among BlackBerry users, but if MobiHand is doing something right, we believe they will also be able to enlarge the cake and eat their fair share, too.
