Robotics has advanced to such a stage where the Japanese have invented the first bipedal robot in the world that can jump like a frog. Dubbed Mowgli, this creation from the University of Tokyo can jump approximately 50cm into the air with a perfect landing. This was made possible by the inclusion of artificial muscles in the legs that are driven by compressed air unlike traditional robots. Mowgli measures 1.2m tall and does not only wow curious onlookers with its ability to jump, but it can also kick a football to boot. Japan is still trying to develop flexible robots that are capable of acting as caregivers to humans as their population ages, and the Mowgli is but a small step towards that dream.
Gresso, known for all things luxurious, has introduced a new collection of flash drives under the Adam & Eve title. The drives will be available in either; a bitten apple, crucifix or plain rectangle design.
Your USB port is unlikely to have ever come in contact with African Mahogany or African Blackwood, and unless you are an idiot, or have a very nice desk, it never will. Regardless, that has not prevented Gresso from decking their new USB flash drives in the materials; they chucked in some diamonds and a gold clasp on the caoutchouc (rubber) strap, for good measure. The heaven sent devices will set you back between $300-$1000, depending on option choices, but it would surely be a sin to purchase. [Luxist]
Gamers will definitely find this Tetris-inspired case mod a joy to look at - it actually consists of an entire farm of networked systems that are ready to host some serious multiplayer gaming action at the drop of a hat. Build by the Spanish armada, er, gaming clan known as Planet Express Klan, you could say that this is one of the largest case mods ever. Each individual computer case was custom built from scratch, using colorfully liy acrylic panels that were interlocked into this giant Tetris-like puzzle. You get a beastly quad-core Core 2 Extreme processor running in each system to power your latest multiplayer entertainment titles.
Well if there are still any doubts as to who’s winning the portable console war, let them be dispelled here and now: in the less than three years since it’s been on the market, the Nintendo DS (in both its Lite and Phat flavors) has sold a total of 50 million units, according to the unofficial VG Chartz. Sony’s PSP (released less than one month later in Japan)? Less than half that number. While the PSP will surely get a sales boost now that it too has slimmed down, DS still seems to be the clear choice of the majority of gamers. Next challenge for Mario and friends: hitting 100 million faster than the iPod.
POSDATA from Korea has unveiled its G100 gaming device recently, bringing WiMAX connectivity to the world of portable gaming. Features include a 4″ touchscreen LCD that slides open to reveal a game pad underneath, a design that’s inspired by the deluge of smartphones that flood our market today. Additional connectivity options include Bluetooth and WiFi, making this perfect for surfing on-the-go or pulling up a cheat from the Internet when you’re stuck in a game somewhere. No word on pricing, although the G100 is tipped to be released in the US by the end of the year - hopefully it will be in time for the holiday season. Do you forsee this overtaking the PSP and Nintendo DS Lite in the long run? Hopefully the software (read: games) will be able to give this a longer shelf life than the Gizmondo…
Very rarely will you find instructions to downgrade a device, but there are now instructions floating around the Internet, allowing you to downgrade the iPhone from 1.1.1 to 1.0.2. That won’t result in downgrading your baseband, and hence that means you won’t be able to re-unlock an iPhone which has already been upgraded to 1.1.1, but then again it is still 1.0.2 where third party applications are concerned. Currently, iPhone Dev Team is trying to find a way to downgrade the new firmware, allowing people to unlock their phones again. Well, if you’re an AT&T user, there basically isn’t anything to worry about as you did not irk Cupertino’s wrath by dealing with this shady unlocking business.
The Fantasy Flyer Ceiling Fan definitely brings a new take to the word ceiling fan, but I suspect that this ceiling fan is more suitable toward kids than adults. It features a loyal reproduction of the famous Chance Vought F4U Corsair, known as the most feared fighter aircraft of the Pacific theater of WWII. This Marine Corp aircraft had a superior kill ratio of 11 to 1, so why not bring home a little piece of history into your home while keeping cool at it? It retails for $175 if you want this piece of home improvement.
Helenair over at Metacafe uploaded this video of the first preparation flight of a 1/5th scaled MIG-29 fighter-jet. The going gets tasty at around 3min 15s, so skip ahead for the goodies.
We do not know a great deal about the project except; the team has seemingly created a sweet RC scaled MIG-29, costing between $5,000—$15,000 and the replica was fitted with two turbine engines, which were not tested at their full capacity. Helenair said, regarding the test:
“We never go full throttle cox the engine (2 turbine) are too powerful, apply full throttle the plane will go out of sight in matter of seconds.”
We are not sure about you, but we want to see those bad-boys at full throttle—seconds of excitement sounds familiar and awesome to us! [Metacafe via Techeblog]
