Guitar Copier

Guitar Copier

If you were ever worried that you might lose your beloved guitar through some unfortunate accident, you could probably make a backup of it. This guitar photocopier sure isn’t something that every household will have, but if you like quirky stuff, maybe this will appeal to you. Just drag one arm over the original guitar body and the machine will proceed to carve a similar shape onto a wooden blank. It probably won’t help you too much if you plan to set up a counterfeit guitar shop overnight though.

Retro Space Arcade Cabinet Mixes Retro, Futurism with Banana Color Scheme [Arcades]

August 18th, 2008

The classic arcade cabinet of yesterdecade gets a snazzy makeover in the Retro Space machine from designer Martijn Koch. It’s a tribute in part to “honor the design of the first ever arcade cabinet” which was Computer Space, from 1971. So it’s got arcade-quality controls for two people, including the ever-important trackball (good news for Missile Command fans) and squeezes in 100+ games and a suite of emulators.

But since it’s a modern build, Martijn popped in media-player functionality for audio and video, a 2 x 90W audiophile-quality amp/speaker system and a 24-inch 1080p flat-screen monitor. Lovely, in a retro-futuretastic way… but why oh why did he choose yellow? Good enough for bananas and custard, but arcade machines need to be more sober. You should be able to buy one sometime, price on application. [Retrothing]

AT&T and HTC have finally pushed out the Windows Mobile 6.1 update, which according to Softpedia, brings threaded SMS, video share calling, MS Voice Command, Remote Desktop Monitor and managed programs. Everyone with a Tilt should download this ASAP and get the benefit that fewer bugs provides. Our tipster also tells us that WM6.1 will be available on stock phones within 7-10 days as well. Does improve the video drivers any? [HTC - Thanks Ding!]

120GB Zune slips past the FCC

August 18th, 2008

Craving some more room for that season of Avatar you’ve been trying to cram onto your Zune without dropping your Mega Carrie Underwood Workout Mix? It looks like Microsoft is one-upping its 80GB model with a 120GB version, which just blew by the FCC, and should allow all your media to live in harmony. As might be expected, there’s not much other than that new hard drive to set this new model apart — the drive size is the same, as is the 2.5 firmware. The FCC tested this out on June 19th, which helps us exactly none in pinning when this will ship to stores, how much it will cost, or how they’ll ever top those Joy Division designs.

Street Fighter iPods

Street Fighter iPods

Hmm, is iPod etching such a big business? Guess so, since the Street Fighter iPods are now available hot off the heels of the X-Files iPods. Capcom will be offering this etching service for iPods, letting you have mugshots of Ryu, Sagat and even the pretty Chun Li who has endless miles of legs. You also have the choice of throwing in additional details such as a name or personal message, and this service is meant for the well-heeled only as it will cost around $549 for a 32GB Chun Li iPod touch. Ah well, nobody said living an outstanding life would come cheap, eh?

Lunocet Monofin Makes Man into Michael Phelps [Lunocet]

August 18th, 2008

Boy that Michael Phelps is fast. No one can argue it, he can dominate in almost any style of swim and possesses one of the best dolphin kicks in the world. That is, one of the best kicks aside from some random guy using the Lunocet monofin. Because while Phelps is able to swim at an inhuman 5 miles per hour, the average swimmer using the carbon fiber Lunocet will routinely hit about 8mph. Is it too late for us to book our tickets to Beijing?

The Lunocet weighs about 2.5lbs out of the water, but in the water it’s positively buoyant. Constructed from silicon wrapped in carbon fiber with a titanium footplate, the system gives you the same power on a downstroke as an upstroke. Coupled with a pair of strong legs the monofin could theoretically generate enough power to drive a human completely out of the water—yes, real life dolphin acrobatics at last.

So is the Lunocet worth its $1250 to $1800 pricetag? We don’t know, but it sure sounds a whole lot better than actually training. And we doubt that we’ll be getting access to DARPA’s swimming tech anytime soon. [Lunocet]

RCA’s 1969 Two Thousand TV Was Computerized Vision of Future, for $2,000 [Retromodo]

August 18th, 2008

Back in 1969 RCA made an attempt at a high-end TV that was a vision of the sets of the year 2000. The Two Thousand was even made in a limited run of 2,000 and cost $2,000. That’s around $12,000 in today’s money, but for that price you got a 23-inch Hi-Lite tube that had “such a vivid, detailed picture” you could “even watch it in a brightly-lit room.” There were even “computer-like “memory circuits” that stored your fave channels, and preserved settings for volume and picture control. That must’ve seemed like the future indeed in an era of dial-twiddle-tuning to find the right VHF channel. The full advert page makes fascinating reading.

“No motors, no noise and no moving parts to wear out,” just computer-designed “electronic memories”… fabulous, especially since I remember hunkering down before our old TV to swirl the dial. My Dad used to get me to change the channels, as a kind of intelligent remote control. Nowadays my cat brushes past the touch-controls on my flat-screen LCD TV and does that job for me.
