Wearable lab coat TV packs thousands of LEDs, heads for Burning Man (video)

Sure, we’ve seen iPad hats and augmented reality tattoos, but a 60-inch display suitable for hours of wear under the hot Nevada desert sun? Well that’s just crazy talk. Believe it or not, a one Dave Forbes built exactly that: a 12V battery powered, 160 x 120-pixel monitor capable of displaying standard NTSC analog video from an in-pocket iPod. The result is nothing short of incredible, but when you’re building a wearable lab coat-based TV with thousands of LEDs and a pair of circuit boards, features like breathability and water-wicking tend to get overlooked. Forbes spent six months creating this ultimate gadget, which is likely to make quite the colorful splash when he shows it off next month at Burning Man. But with a multi-month time commitment and $20,000 price tag, we can’t help but wonder what this ‘brainiac’ could have come up with were he to redirect those resources towards a super-slick tech project for the masses, instead.

Yammer logoYammer, the enterprise private social network, is coming soon as an app on your Windows Phone device. Yammer users will soon be able to access their company’s social network though a native app on their WP7 device.

The Yammer app for WP7 features: threaded conversations to make posting, replying, reading and keeping track of conversations less of a hassle, multi-feed access, multi-network access, member directory and profiles, private messaging, and live tile integration. No word on when exactly the app will drop, but Yammer has mentioned “later this quarter”. How many of you use Yammer at work?

HP TouchPad 4G arrives Stateside via AT&T

If you are looking forward to the HP TouchPad 4G, then here’s the deal – it will be available only via AT&T when it arrives as an exclusive model. Just what do you expect the TouchPad 4G to pack? How about a speedier 1.5GHz processor to kick things off, alongside 32GB of internal memory, built-in GPS navigation capability, and AT&T wireless mobile broadband connectivity just in case there are moments when you are out of a Wi-Fi network’s range?

Of course, getting a 3G-enabled tablet would also mean additional costs to your monthly budget, as you would need to make room for yet another data plan. Good thing AT&T has their DataConnect Plans for Tablets, letting you opt for either prepaid or postpaid mobile broadband data service which fits your needs to a T. Apart from that, HP TouchPad 4G owners can also have their share of unlimited access where AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots around the country are concerned. There is still no word on pricing as at press time, so stay tuned. [Press Release]

Nintendo Video arrives on Japanese 3DS tomorrow, American equivalent and Netflix ‘later this summer’

Nintendo Video arrives on Japanese 3DS tomorrow, American equivalent and Netflix coming 'later this summer'

It wouldn’t be a Nintendo product if the JDM release didn’t get special treatment, and that practice continues here for the 3DS. The Nintendo Video service hits the Japanese version of the parallax-busting handheld tomorrow, allowing the download of 2D and 3D content that’s been “recommended” by the house Mario built. It’s actually the second video service to hit Japanese systems, following SpotPass TV’s earlier launch with original content. When will we Americans get something fulfilling? “Later this summer” according to a Nintendo statement, which also confirms Netflix will be available “soon” — soon enough to save your subscription?

Pew: Smartphone owners increasingly ignoring other devices to get online

Some more fun phone facts from the folks at Pew: 83 percent of American adults own a cellphone, 35 percent have a smartphone, and 87 percent smartphone owners use their handset to browse the internet and read email, apparently having decided that the things are good for more than just making phone calls and keeping papers from blowing away. Also of interest is the fact that 28 percent of the 2,277 people surveyed actually use their small screen devices as their primary method for accessing the internet. It’s worth noting that it’s not a huge sample size we’re working with here, so maybe hold off on declaring the PC dead — still, it may be a sign of lots of squinting to come.
